We often get inquiries from SIT members about regulations concerning membership status:
How can you become a SIT member of the RRS?
How long can you be a SIT member?
What regulations are associated?

These questions are being clarified by the RRS constitution, article III point 4:

"Pre- or post-doctoral students may be elected as Scholars in Training. Membership as a Scholar in Training is limited to six years, but may be extended indefinitely by petitioning the Membership Committee. The fulfillment of these qualifications shall be determined by examination of the membership application. Scholars affiliated with an Institutional Member may be nominated by that Institutional Member. Scholars in Training have all the privileges of Full Members except that they may not vote or hold office."

Dear SIT Members,

A belated happy Valentine's Day and Lunar New Year to everyone! This is the second newsletter of 2016 and my first as a SIT committee member. It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be serving the Radiation Research Society (RRS) and you, the SIT members!

As I look forward to my new role on the SIT committee, I simultaneously prepare for my transition back to medical school. Although this is a busy time with finalizing manuscripts and writing my Ph.D. thesis, it is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the past four years and all the knowledge I've gained and the friends I have made, both of which are largely due to the RRS and the RRS-SIT. Although I am sad to be temporarily moving away from research, I look forward to being able to impart my knowledge and guidance to those my junior. Unfortunately we will not be RRS-SIT members forever and as we progress in our careers, it is important to not forget about the experiences, individuals, and societies/organizations that have helped us along the way, for we will eventually be passed the torch and tasked with guiding new trainees in their own career journeys. Furthermore, I am certain that the radiation sciences will be an element in any career path that we choose, whether it is focussed on basic research, clinical activities, academic teaching, energy exploration, radiation protection or simply being a responsible voice in general matters where the effects of radiation are discussed.

Moving back towards the present, we have a very exciting RRS meeting coming up on October 16-19th, with the SIT Workshop being held on October 15th, 2016. I do wish the location were a bit nicer. I'm obviously kidding. HAWAII! Joking aside, the annual meetings provide an unparalleled opportunity to showcase your research, learn from incredible scientific presentations, and network with your fellow SIT and RRS members. To this end, do not forget to submit your abstracts and apply for an SIT Travel Award or Early Career Investigator (ECI) Travel Award. The submission deadline is March 28th, so APPLY NOW! Additional information can be found here.

Lastly, please remember to:
  • Send us your recent papers to include in the monthly newsletter
  • Create/update your profile on the RRS website
  • Make sure your RRS membership is current and/or speak with your institution about becoming an Institutional Member
  • Join the RRS and/or RRS-SIT Facebook groups
  • Send us any thought(s) that you may have towards strengthening our society and promoting its mission

I hope you all have a healthy and enjoyable start to the year. May good results ever be in your favor!
Jason Domogauer
SIT Committee Member
