I have fond memories of working with JL while planning the design and installation of our JL Shepherd irradiators. JL asked, what dose rates do you want? I answered that I wanted to cover from 30 Gy/min down to a few cGy/wk, and we want to collimate the beam, and the irradiator has to be self-contained and fit in a small room. We can do that was the answer I received and so he did. Thank you JL for all that you have done for us individually, for radiation sciences, and for the use of radiation in industry. We will miss you! Your friend and colleague, Roger W Howell, Rutgers University.
