Invitatio
n to a Special Program:
The Radiation Research Society is a professional society dedicated to promoting original research in the natural science relating to radiation, facilitating integration of different fields in the study of radiation effects, and promoting the diffusion of knowledge in these fields.

The Radiation Research Society (RRS) is pleased to announce that it is initiating a program of outreach to secondary schools. Society members are generally active researchers in university, medical school and national laboratory settings whose teaching is primarily targeted at graduate/medical students in physics, chemistry, biology and radiation therapy. We recognize that at the K-12 level, national science framework structures and student skill levels will be important determinants in developing appropriate teaching materials. Therefore we identify the need for a process by which lesson plans or other curriculum materials could be developed in an interactive fashion between radiation research professionals and teaching professionals. It is our goal to identify and partner RRS professionals with teachers in the same geographical area who could collaborate in this endeavor as well as in dissemination of knowledge about radiation to the public at large.

The 2
014 annual meeting of the RRS will be held from September 21-24, 2014 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada This represents an opportunity to promote interactions between scientists from around the country (and several foreign countries) and secondary school teachers in nearby states. As a prelude to its annual meeting the RRS will therefore be hosting a special program on Saturday, September 20. The special session will include a lecture series on 8 – 10 topics related to radiation which are directly linked to topics included in the Next Generation Science Standards. The lecture series will be accompanied by a hosted luncheon with both senior and junior (scholars in training) society members, who are engaged in professional training activities, and an informal session in which teachers can partner with RRS members and discuss plans for Next Gen compatible curriculum development with science professionals.

The special program is open to credentialed teachers engaged in science education at the grade 9 – 12 level. The meeting venue will accommodate up to 200 attendees. A block of rooms is being held at the Red Rock Resort for the 60th Annual Meeting of the Radiation Research Society; if you require overnight lodging and wish to stay a the meeting location, Red Rock Resort, please call our toll free line 877-216-1919 and ask for an RRS reservation agent. Interested teachers are also invited to attend the main RRS meeting with a reduced registration fee.
