ACCREDITATION INFORMATION: Radiation Research Society's 2017 Annual Meeting

Course Overview:
As the population of Americans and the world increases so too does the risk of developing cancer. Radiotherapy plays a prominent role in the control and eradication of nearly every type of cancer and critical to the continued and future success of radiotherapy is a fundamental understanding of radiation effects at the biophysical, radiochemical, molecular and tissue specific levels. The increasing world population also places a heavy demand on technology at many levels, many of which depend on radiation for energy production, food sterilization and medical diagnostics. Occupational and environmental exposures can contribute to secondary radiogenic cancers highlighting further the need to understand the detailed effects of ionizing radiation exposure on biological systems. The efficient and timely detection and treatment of cancer and other diseases that depend on radiation will not only improve patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer survivors, but also help resolve rising health-care expenses.

Given the critical role of radiation in the medical and select occupational settings, it is essential to provide a educational backdrop that highlights recent advances in radiation sciences that have a significant impact on health care in the US and worldwide. This conference will examine current advances in interdisciplinary approaches towards detection, prevention and treatment of primary and secondary malignancies, with an emphasis on basic science, preclinical and clinical research.

Doctors and other health professionals will be instructed on how to incorporate this new information into their own practices and make intelligent decisions regarding the treatment of cancer and survivorship issues for the optimization of health. Topical reviews will provide updates in critical areas of interest to physicians and research professionals, while research symposium and workshops will provide ample opportunity to learn about state-of-the-art breakthroughs in basic science and translational research geared toward improved patient outcomes.

Specific areas of emphasis will include:

  • Multidisciplinary radiation research
  • Precision medicine and advanced radiotherapies
  • Treating radioresistance through targeted approaches, immune & metabolic modulation
  • Advanced imaging and nanomedicine
  • Neurobiology and radiation sciences for the future
  • Radiation injury and normal tissue damage
  • Radiation risk and carcinogenesis

    Target Audience:
    This activity is designed to educate a wide range of physicians and other health care professionals including Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Physicians Assistants, Clinical and Basic Science Researchers seeking to update and stay current with the rapid advancements in radiation sciences.

    Global Objectives:
    At the end of this activity, the participants will be able to:
    • Keep abreast of current advancements in preclinical and clinical radiation research to improve cancer therapies and patient outcomes.
    • Stay current with a range of technological advancements in imaging and radiation beam delivery.
    • Refresher courses designed to update physicians and scientists at all levels on basic and clinical radiation sciences.
