Dear SIT Members,
In the last newsletter, we invited you to nominate mentors for the SIT Excellence in Mentoring Award. We are quite happy that you gave an enormous response to the call. We received 15 nomination letters showing that there are many excellent researchers serving the radiation research community who are also excellent mentors.
The strength of competition gives value to any award. I know it very well: I am quite good at collecting awards without real competition J. This is not the case for the SIT Excellence in Mentoring Award. While the nominations are still under evaluation, it is already clear that several nominees deserve this distinction, although only one will receive this honor. Thus, do not be disappointed if your nominees are not awarded this year, you can always try in the next year. Based on the nomination letters, they well deserve it.
Besides the personal values of the mentors, the nomination letters provided another insight into the busy life of principal investigators. When I was a graduate student, I heard that researchers showing excellence in science are always overloaded by non-scientific tasks. One week ago this statement was reinforced by an excellent group leader, who admitted that he has to continuously fight with other involvements to keep his focus on research. Having this in mind, it is particularly valuable if a principal investigator has an always-open door for their mentees and helps them both in their professional and personal life. It is great that many of you have such mentors.
It is also important to realize that there are some great advantages of being a SIT. While it also has its own difficulties and challenges, we probably face less distraction caused by other involvements, and we can more easily focus on research. The group leader, I talked to last week, referred to the PhD and postdoc periods as the most enjoyable times in the career of a researcher. Thus, I would like to wish all of us great years in science while being a SIT and to become excellent mentors like those who were nominated.
Finally, we would like to congratulate all the SITs who won Travel Award for the RRS meeting. Please do not forget to accept (or decline) it by 8th July. The reserved hotel block is also filling quickly, so book your room as soon as possible. The late breaking abstract site is now open until 25th July. If you have any questions about the meeting, please contact Audrey Rinehart ( We look forward to seeing you in Hawaii.

The SIT committee is now accepting nominations for the SIT Excellence in Mentorship Award. Many of us have made the experience that good mentorship is mandatory for a sound career development.
If you believe your mentor deserves recognition for his/her work in guiding early career scientists, please send a nomination letter detailing your nominee and their contributions for consideration to Keep in mind that a mentor can be nominated by multiple people. We look forward to receiving your nominations. Nominations accepted until June 12.
In this regard, the SIT committee released a brief overview of what good mentorship can mean, which is, e.g., important when searching for a new training position in the field of Radiation Research. The compilation was based on the input we received in last year's mentorship award nominations, where we were overwhelmed by the wide span of aspects brought up.
