John D. Boice Jr.
Young Investigator Award
Established April 1, 2019

Purpose of the Award
This Award is given to recognize an early career professional engaged in some aspect of science pertaining to radiation protection and measurements. While there is no specific age requirement, in keeping with the intent of the award, early in career is typically considered to be within 10 years of completion of training (e.g., post-doc, residency, fellowship) which most often is under age 40 years. The work upon which the nomination is based must be in one or more of the areas of radiation research represented by one or more of the Program Area Committees (PACs) of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP). Candidates who are unsuccessful in any given year may be re-nominated in a subsequent year if they continue to meet the above criteria.

Nomination Process
Nominations and letters of support for a candidate may be submitted by any NCRP Council Member or Emeritus Member or a sponsor from the leadership of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), American College of Radiology (ACR), American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncologist (ASTRO), Health Physics Society (HPS), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Radiation Research Society (RRS), Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), or by other radiation-related organizations and interested scientists. The dossier to be provided by the sponsor of a candidate should include the following:

Candidate’s curriculum vitae;

Candidate’s bibliography, which should be divided into the following categories: (a)peer reviewed papers (b) proceedings, book chapters, letters

Two papers that best represent the candidate’s work;

Supporting letters from at least two but not more than three persons (including the sponsor) who are familiar with the candidate’s accomplishments. It is strongly suggested that the sponsor collect all of the necessary information and supporting letters prior to submitting the dossier to be sure that all materials are submitted together prior to the deadline on August 1st each year.

Selection Process
A chair and members of an awards committee will be appointed each year at the Fall meeting of the NCRP Board of Directors (BOD). This committee will review the applications and make their recommendation of the top three finalists in rank order. The NCRP BOD will select the awardee at their Winter board meeting.

Award
The recipient of this award will receive $500 and a travel grant to attend the annual meeting of the NCRP where they will be recognized for their accomplishments. In addition, the awardee will be given electronic and hard copies of five NCRP reports of their choosing.
